1. Nothing Is For Everyone
Billions of people will never come across anything I create. And of those who do, many will think my creations are lousy. Disinterest, criticism, and disdain are unavoidable byproducts of expressing yourself in this world. Even if I was the globally adored Mr. Bean, I still wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea.
…but I am someone’s cup of tea. And so are you.
Someone, somewhere is waiting to hear what we have to say…see what we have to make…read what we have to write. Rather than focus on everyone we won’t reach, what if we put our energy towards serving those someones?
Lesson 3 of The Marketing Seminar asks: Who are you trying to change? Who are you willing to leave out? In the accompanying video, Seth Godin talks about the idea that if someone doesn’t like or care about something, then it’s not for them. In this blog post, Seth writes:
The goal isn’t to serve everyone. The goal is to serve the right people.
The right people are those who value what you offer and support the change you seek to create. By expressing yourself authentically, you’ll filter out everyone else. Trust that the right people will remain.
My blog won’t be for everyone, but it might be for you.
Someone will inevitably come across my blog and think that it’s a load of nonsense. And I’m about to filter out many more people. Because as I was reflecting upon this idea, I found myself called to mention the other online course I’m currently taking: intuitive Tarot teacher Lindsay Mack’s “soul centered online intuition course” on connecting with your Inner Voice.
Yes, I just used the words: intuitive, Tarot*, soul, and Inner Voice. I can hardly believe it myself. Clicking “publish” with that sentence in this post was pretty darn uncomfortable. What if they think I’m crazy?
I’ll have lost some people who think I’m wackadoo. And the funny thing is, I might’ve been among them only a while ago. But that’s okay. That’s inevitable. My words don’t serve everyone.
By choosing to express all the dimensions I explore—regardless of how fringe and historically stigmatized they are, I’m filtering out people who wouldn’t appreciate my approach to life. This isn’t for them.
Long story short, I’ve recently found myself in the midst of a spiritual awakening of sorts, and I’ll likely weave these ideas throughout my blog as I weave them throughout my life. I invite you to join me in embracing openness, curiosity, and a beginner’s mind.
If you’re still with me, welcome. Thanks for being here.
*I’ve come across Tarot cards as a wonderful practice of meditation and self-reflection. In my experience, and in Lindsay’s teaching of the Tarot, it’s not fortune-telling, but rather holding a mirror up to the present moment.
Lindsay is the creator of Soul Tarot, a reinterpretation and intentional utilization of the Tarot as a healing tool, one that can assist us in differentiating the noise of our brain from the truth of our soul.
